This week I tried something different. A couple of years ago, I created a mantra for myself: I am always going to bet on myself, and if I lose, I’m going to double down. I don’t know if that makes perfect sense to everyone, but to me, it means that if I face a setback, I will simply work harder.

So, I reached out to my coworkers and sent out invitations. I talked to the monitors to gather ideas, and most importantly, I spoke with a female colleague who was very interested in participating. However, the sessions take place every Friday—the same day she works from home. She suggested it would be great to have the sessions during lunchtime instead. It was a brilliant idea! People could be more relaxed, and we could just chat without a script or specific “dynamics” (games or structured activities). The rest of us thought the idea was awesome.

Parallel to this, I spent the whole week building up the strength to talk to the HR manager of another public service located in the same building. When I finally found the courage to contact her via email, she invited me to visit her office. During our formal introductions, she told me she already knew who I was because she was just one year behind me at university. Talking to her became so easy! She loved the initiative and is going to push the right paperwork to allow her institution to participate.

I felt like I was on fire! Although only four people attended this session—so I haven’t “won” yet, I feel like I am on the right track. I’m going to double down on my bet next week.

Word of the Week:

To Double Down: To become more tenacious, zealous, or resolute in a position or undertaking. Usage: “Even though attendance was low, I decided to double down on my efforts to promote the English club.”
